The Work of the First Caliph

Having seen the election of Abû Bakr as the first caliph of Islam, let’s now turn our attention to the events that took place during his caliphate.

A few days before his death, the Prophet had organized an expedition to the north in the territory of present-day Jordan against the Arab tribes who had given aid to the Byzantines, the declared enemies at the battle of Mu’ta in the year 8 AH /629 AD. The command was given to Ussâma whose father had been the adopted son of the Messenger , had been killed in this battle. This gave him the opportunity to avenge his father’s death.
